Possible Bullpen Help is Headed North

Well, it appears that Jonathan Lucroy had a flight partner on his trip from Nashville, Tennesse to Milwaukee, Wisconsin tonight.

Lucroy, who was with the Sounds on a rehab assignment, is set to return from the disabled list Thursday evening when the Milwaukee Brewers take on the Washington Nationals at Miller Park. Joining him on the 25-man roster, however, will be the season-long closer for the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate: Jim Henderson.

Henderson, 29, is a 6’5″, 190 lb, right-handed relief pitcher. Over the course of his All-Star 2012 season for the Sounds, Henderson’s line reads thus:

4-3, 1.69 ERA, 35 G, 48.0 IP, 36 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 2 HR, 22 BB, 56 K.

He has held opponents to a .214 batting average though his ground out to fly out ratio is a potentially frightening 0.55 meaning that he gets almost twice as many outs in the air as on the ground.

He is not a savior by any means, but Henderson, who has worn the uniform of 11 different minor league teams without a previous call up to The Show,  has certainly pitched well enough that he has earned this promotion. It isn’t simply coming because the rest of the bullpen has been pretty shaky all season. He deserves the opportunity which will come at the expense of……

George Kottaras.

With the combination of Lucroy’s return and Henderson not having been on Milwaukee’s 40-man roster, Kottaras was Designated For Assignment to make room on both rosters. (The other 25-man spot was cleared by optioning Jeff Bianchi to Nashville.)

For now, here is a link to Henderson’s MiLB.com player page along with his bio from the same:

“Signed by the Milwaukee Brewers to a minor league contract on April 1, 2009 … previously selected by the Chicago Cubs from the Washington Nationals in the Minor League portion of the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 7, 2006 … originally selected by the Montreal Expos in the 26th round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft out of Tennessee Wesleyan College … graduated from Central Memorial (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) High School in 2000.”
