Melvin: Gomez Appeal Decision Could Take “Several Days”

Another update about Carlos Gomez and his upcoming appeal hearing on Friday, May 9.

Before Monday night’s game in Milwaukee, Brewers GM Doug Melvin met with the media. He confirmed that Gomez’s appeal would be heard on Friday but then also said the decision about reducing the length of the suspension Gomez received from an on-field incident in Pittsburgh back on Easter Sunday could take “several days”.

Once a decision comes down, Gomez must immediately begin serving his suspension and the Brewers will be playing with a 24-man active roster for the games Gomez must miss.

But if it does indeed take “several days”, it’s likely that Gomez doesn’t miss any of the marquee interleague series with the New York Yankees this coming weekend and instead could miss part (or all) of next week’s mid-week series against, ironically enough, the Pittsburgh Pirates.

That series could also mark the return of injured Pirates backstop Russell Martin, who was himself given a one-game suspension for his role in the on-field incident against Gomez and the Brewers. Martin has been on the DL with an injured hamstring.

The potential benefit for the Brewers if Gomez serves against the Pirates instead of the Yankees is that their own injured star, Ryan Braun, is eligible to return from a stint on the disabled list where he is currently rehabbing a right oblique strain.
