Brewers Agree to 1 year deal with CF Mike Cameron

By: Big Rygg

CameronThe Brewers have agreeed in principal to a one-year contract with free agent Center Fielder Mike Cameron, pending a physical.

I haven't heard a dollar figure yet, but will edit this post when I do.

The report is due to this signing, Bill Hall will come back to the infield and 2007 NL Rookie of the Year Ryan Braun will patrol left field in 2008.

Brewer Nation - How do you feel about this move and subsequent fall out?

UPDATE: The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is reporting that the contract is for $5MM in 2008 with a Club option for 2009 valued at $10MM (with a $750K buyout). How much we're paying Cameron, who will only be available for 137 games next year, is $4.22MM (specifically $4,228,395.06).

It's official. As it stands, Prince Fielder is the only left-handed bat in the everyday lineup if only for a year.

I beg this is just a way the Brewers can get more players in order to pull off the Scott Rolen deal.

The Cards need pitching, infield, and a center fielder. Hopefully, Cameron, Hall, and Capuano are all part of this deal.

If this isn't another deal, I don't have much of a opinion. I don't feel we improved enough and I can't believe that they are giving up on Ryan Braun everyday at 3rd base...

Rob, check out the post i just put up on the numbers for these guys. If we trade Bill Hall and get Scott Rolen, we can pick up Kenny Lofton and probably have the best OBP 1-2 punch in centerfield than most teams have ever had. Dillon, Hall, Gross, Bush, Capuano and Vargas are all on the block. Should be an exciting couple of weeks before Spring Training. 5 Weeks Ya'll!

How many teams has Cameron played for? Is he a bad clubhouse guy(ala Jeff Kent) or is it just circumstance? If he stays a Brewer I sure hopes he finds his niche here as he is very talented and adds a Gold Glove and speed on the bases. Where does he hit? 5th, 6th, or 7th? You experts need to answer these questions for this CASUAL FAN

I do know that recently he has been injury prone in the way Rickie Weeks has been. It's always those nagging injuries that drag him down. I haven't seen anything that would indicate he's a bad clubhouse guy. He was traded by the White Sox to the Reds for Paul Konerko during his last year of arbitration. It was in Seattle where this happened; Taken from BP

"Why aren’t teams more active in getting their players medical care? Cameron complained at the start of the year that he was having trouble picking up the spin and movement on pitches, and it took months for the team to get him help. It turned out that his right eye was badly messed up, having become a different shape than the left from an injury that might go back to a ball he took to the orbital bone years ago in the minors. Cameron’s vision in that eye had deteriorated dramatically. He was fitted for a right-eye-only contact, but how long does it take to adjust to that kind of thing, mid-season, to really get to the point where you’re seeing well? The difference between being a great hitter and a bad one is so very fine, and a player’s sight so important, that it’s hard to believe, months later, that it took as long as it did for the team to get him to a good optometrist."

After that... nothing would indicate there's a problem. In fact... here's another tid bit from BP.

"Having hit four home runs in the game, already tying the major league record, in his fifth at-bat, Cameron was up with a 3–0 count, and took a strike right down the middle. Faced with the choice between hacking at the pitch, which no one would have blamed him for, and playing the game, forsaking the record to get on base again, Cameron watched the pitch go by. You want an unselfish, giving player? Here he is."

How is Mike Cameron better than Geoff Jenkins? Cameron is not the style of player these team needs at all. Disappointing. He strikes out all the time and his On Base Percentage is low. Jeez he is even older than Jenkins. I dont know how the Brewers see this as an upgrade. A platoon of Gabe Gross and Tony Gwynne would probably produce 20 homers and 70 RBIs. Thumbs down on this deal, Brewers still need another "big bat" to put in that line up.

I like this signing as Cameron brings a gold glove to the Brewers outfield. However I do not like the idea of bringing Hall back to the infield and putting braun in the outfield. Move Hall to left for a year and then when LaPorta comes up in 2009 move him back to center and decline Cameron's option. Hall's defenese greatly improved over the course of the year and he wouldn't be a weakness. Also I really believe Braun should stay at third. His defense was awful last year but I truly believe he will improve greatly next year and with him in the infield the Brewers keep the young and talented infield intact

I hope there is another trade coming. Even though Hall is better defensively than Braun - I did not want to see them give up on him just yet. If there are no additional trades - I am not sure how this benefits the Team and not sure what this does to future plans. Do the Brewers have a top prospect 3rd baseman in the minors?

dakfish,

Yes. His name is Mat Gamel. He is still a couple years away but he is being projected as a future major league player...
