The Bud Selig Disease

by South Side Rob

That’s my term for anybody who suggests that the current young stars of the Milwaukee Brewers will not remain Milwaukee Brewers into their free-agency years of their career(s).

I have a good idea on the rules of baseball’s free-agency but to always make sure, I double-check. Here is an excellent link that explains major league baseball free-agency how it exists today. Based on this article, teams retain the rights of their players for the first 6 years of their major-league playing career. If my math is correct, here are the season(s) our young stars will become free-agent eligible:

  • Dave Bush – 2010
  • Rickie Weeks - 2011
  • J.J. Hardy - 2011
  • Prince Fielder - 2012
  • Corey Hart - 2012
  • Carlos Villanueva - 2012 or 2013
  • Ryan Braun - 2013
  • Tony Gwynn - 2013
  • Yovani Gallardo - 2013
  • Manny Parra - 2013

I can’t find the article that states if a player is in his first major league season, that season will not count as a full season if the player doesn’t obtain so many at bats, appearances, or is on the 25-man active roster for so many days during their rookie season. That’s why on Villanueva and Gwynn, I’m guessing that last year; they were still considered rookies because of the lack of being on the major league roster in 2006.

I just want to point something out. On January 13th, 2005, the Brewers were sold to a Los Angeles investment banker by the name of Mark Attanasio. Every time I read somebody express their worries about not being able to afford Fielder, or Gallardo, or Braun, remind them that as of 1/13/2005, the Brewers are no longer owned by Bud Selig…

Thanks for the heads up on that. I think people fail to realize that with the upcoming attendance boost, Mark Attanasio and the salary cuts with Sheets gone next year and Suppan in 3 years, this team can lock up most of these guys for most of their careers if we see them worthy.

Rob, I write in this thing a lot and will probably continue to do so. But because i write so much I started my own blog over at blogger.com because... well it's free. In any case, I threw your site up as the only link because I think it's the only Brewers blog out there with solid insight. If you would oblige me, could I post the URL here or would you put it up in your side bar? The gesture would be greatly appreciated and would give people another view of the Crew. Let me know.

Aaron, I'm sure that will be okay. I let Adam be in control of our site setup but I'm sure he can take care of that.

The more Brewer talk, the better. I've been reading Tom Haudricourt over at jsonline all off-season.

Of course, they have a boat load of casual fans posting and very few baseball fans who really understand it at the major-league level but none the less, I rather read that than the countless Yankee and Red Sox blogs that are littering in cyberspace...

Aaron,

Just post the URL and I'll get it added to our "Blogs in the Brewer Nation" section. I need to update that anyway to remove Jenkins'.

Thanks guys. Keep up the good work and we can banter back and forth between blogs. Go Kenny Lofton or Brad Wilkerson. Interesting possibility even if he is on a downward slope.
