Ranking Catcher in the NL Central

By: Big Rygg

Here we go with the backstops. I wasn't sure whether or not to just rank starters or to rank both catchers for a roster by taking the top two from the depth charts out on ESPN. I decided to go with starters alone, but if people think we should rank on both, just say so and I'll edit the post.

  • Jason Kendall / Milwaukee Brewers
  • Geovanny Soto / Chicago Cubs
  • David Ross / Cincinnati Reds
  • Brad Ausmus / Houston Astros
  • Ronny Paulino / Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Yadier Molina / St. Louis Cardinals

Beyond Soto and Paulino, I could have just pulled names out of a hat for 3-6.

Soto
Paulino

Kendall

Molina

Ross

Ausmus

Molina and Paulino fight for the best defense. Kendall will probably have the 2nd best offensive year of these guys unless you consider slugging as a factor.

How can anyone put Soto on top? He has as much MLB experience as Brewer backup Mike Rivera and if Rivera was the everyday catcher, I'd take him over Soto as well. Henry Blanco will be catching everyday by June 1st. There Dave, I put Kendall on top just like you predicted...

How can you assume that a guy without major league experience is going to be bad or not as good as the rest of the group? Kendall won rookie of the year in his first full term, and was probably the second best catcher in the league that year. Soto's numbers in minors indicate he's ready and he amassed solid numbers in the games he played last year when he replaced Kendall as the starter. He even has playoff experience. He may have only went 1 for 6 but he walked twice and hit a 2-run shot.
