Ranking Left Field in the NL Central

by South Side Rob

Let the debate begin. The candidates:

  • Ryan Braun / Milwaukee Brewers
  • Alfonso Soriano / Chicago Cubs
  • Adam Dunn / Cincinnati Reds
  • Carlos Lee / Houston Astros
  • Jason Bay / Pittsburgh Pirates
  • Chris Duncan / St. Louis Cardinals

As hard as picking who's the best, I think this debate will last a few days. One of these will be ranked 4th or 5th but not if you were a fan of that team. Again, I will post my rankings in the comments...

Wow, this one is tough.

1. Braun

2. Lee

3. Soriano

4. Bay

5. Dunn

6. Duncan

Alfonso Soriano / Chicago Cubs
Carlos Lee / Houston Astros

Adam Dunn / Cincinnati Reds

Ryan Braun / Milwaukee Brewers

Jason Bay / Pittsburgh Pirates

Chris Duncan / St. Louis Cardinals

Would have Braun higher if I had ever seen him play left field... and if I did not have that whole sophomore slump fear in the back of my mind. This was very, very tough.

I'm going to go with this one based on how they fit into the rest of the Brewers. It's the only way that I can decide some slotting.

1. Soriano

2. Braun

3. Bay

4. Lee

5. Dunn

6. Duncan

Ok here is the thing, are we ranking these guys by offense, defense, or both? If its both here we go:

1) Alfonso Soriano

2) Ryan Braun

3) Jason Bay

4) Carlos Lee

5) Adam Dunn

6) Chris Duncan

This is a stellar group of talented offensive players, we should rank them just on that. That would be more interesting

Pretty sad to see everybody destroy Dunn considering he had the highest OBP of all these guys except Braun and hit the most bombs with 40. Soriano has a career OBP of .327. He's straight average at the plate and elite in the field.

1)Dunn

2)Braun

3)Bay

4)Lee

5)Soriano

6)Duncan

Yeah just think Melvin didnt want to pull the string on a Adam Dunn/Matt Wise trade last year. Dunn is not that good he is consistantly in the top 3 in NL in strikeouts per year and has a CAREER .248 average. He cannot go back on flyballs and I know you are not going to sat he is a better defensive player than Soriano or Bay. He has a decent OPS but you cant rank him number one. I mean seriously you are just wrong on this one. Good try tho, maybe next time

This one was tough. My order is based on who I'd like in left for the Crew.
1. Soriano

2. Braun

3. Lee

4. Bay

5. Dunn

6. Duncan

Hopefully Braunie will prove me wrong and dominate Soriano with his numbers.

Zep, no offense, but CAREER average means nothing. Sure he's in top 3 in SOs every year, but he's also in the top 10 for walks, 4th amongst outfielders. And if you want to bring up OPS he had a .940 last year, 2nd best amongst this group, beating Soriano's .897. You're right, his defense is awful, but this is left field here, not rocket science. He's hardly a liability. He gets the job done and has a cannon. I'd rather a guy with a .386 OBP who walks 100 times a year than a .337 OBP who only walks about 40 times a year while striking out only 30-40 times more.

165 Ks - 101 BBs = 64

Soriano 130 Ks -31 BBs = 99

I don't know who's wrong here, but I can say putting Alfonso on top is hideous unless you weight defense a **** of a lot. Check your numbers again and get back to me.

At least we can all agree that Duncan is 6! Outside of that, rankings are all over the place.

Thanks to all for their responses. What I believe is the correct one is:

1. Jason Bay

2. Carlos Lee

3. Ryan Braun

4. Alfonso Soriano

5. Adam Dunn

6. Chris Duncan

Bay is easily the best offense/defense LF of the group. Carlos is 2nd because he does not waste his footing and is usually in the right spot to make a play. Braun gets 3rd only on his offense. Soriano is so bad, fantasy players are blind to his weaknesses. While he may have a few assists, its because everyone ran on him. He's the only one of the bunch that can turn a double into a triple because he does not know how to play the corner. Dunn is much like Carlos Lee but with a lower batting average. Chris Duncan plays like he's the son of Kevin Reimer instead.

SSR-You can't be serious.....Did you have a 4 martini lunch today?

Dave, your a Cub-lover. You wouldn't understand the fact that your lovely left-fielder is brutal. As long as pitchers can throw effective off-speed away pitches to Soriano, he's useless. That, or high heat. Low fastballs are the only pitches that Soriano can catch up to. You might even play a better left field with your bum leg than Soriano. Maybe that's why you like him so much...

Players don't need to play defense in basbeball?

Rob key word is EFFECTIVE off speed, not every curve ball breaks hard down and away, not every sinker sinks not every slider is in the dirt good hitters, like Soriano will take advantage and hit **** rods all over the field. He is not brutal at all he is a very, very good player he is strong in all three aspects in baseball offense, defense and intellgence. Dave you are right don't let SSR tell you bad things about Soriano. But Aramis blows get a new lover

Your funny Kyle. Watch how brutal Soriano is. Watch him field a ground ball down the line...
