Burgos Effective, Controlled in MLB Debut

Miller Park was buzzing on Saturday night as the Brewers’ 2012 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, Hiram Burgos, made his Major League debut against the Chicago Cubs.

Burgos’ first pitch was a strike, but despite allowing his first batter faced to reach on a bloop single, Burgos faced the minimum through three. A true test though would be the second time through the order. The hitters made a bit more contact, though none of it solid, in the fourth inning, leading to a Cubs’ run and a tie game.

He was sharp throughout, keeping the visitors off balance with his repertoire of pitches. Back in February, Burgos told me that he throws four pitches: a fastball that sits between 88-92 MPH, a change up between 83-84, a cut fastball of 86-87 MPH, and a curveball down around 73 MPH. He utilized everything he had on this night, working through five full innings and not walking any hitters. He’d have gone farther as he finished the fifth at just 83 pitches, but Ron Roenicke pinch-hit for the young Puerto Rican as the offense had put runners at 2nd and 3rd with just one out.

The Brewers ended up scoring two runs in the inning, putting Burgos in line for his victory MLB victory. Then Brandon Kintzler entered and locked the Cubs down in their half of the sixth before the Brewers tacked on two more runs in the sixth courtesy of the Cubs defense.

All in all, an impressive night for Burgos who had this to say following the game:

“It’s been my dream to play in the big leagues. I’m happy to just help the team win. Six games in a row now.

Burgos said that he was anxious to go out and warm up prior to the game, but once he threw his first pitch, he was comfortable again. He said that the plan he and catcher Jonathan Lucroy were working off of helped him settle in.

The offense and bullpen gave Burgos the support he needed. Brandon Kintzler worked two perfect innings, striking out three. Michael Gonzalez struck out the side in his scoreless 8th inning, despite getting himself into a little trouble along the way. After allowing the lead off hitter to reach in the 9th, Gonzalez was lifted in favor of Burke Badenhop who retired the three Cubs hitters he faced in order to lock up a 5-1 victory. The W goes to Burgos who is now 1-0 in his career with a 1.80 ERA.

Getting his first victory in  his first career start when it takes some guys a long time (if ever) was something that didn’t escape Burgos.

“It’s a blessing. I thank God and my teammates. We were able to score some runs. It’s always good when you get some runs of support.”

Having met Hiram Burgos on more than one occasion, I’m impressed by him. He’s a humble, grateful person who really appreciates the opportunity that he’s earned through impressive play.

Those five runs came courtesy of some opportunistic offense who capitalized when Chicago defenders made errors. Officially there were three errors awarded in the game and they directly led to the Brewers scoring a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The other run on the day was a no doubt solo home run off the bat of the white hot Jonathan Lucroy in the bottom of the second inning. Early runs can be crucial in helping a young pitcher settle in, so leave it to Burgos’ batterymate in the game to get it done.

As for what’s next, Burgos wasn’t sure other than that he’s coming to Miller Park tomorrow. Roenicke also said that it needed to be looked at to determine whether Burgos could move into the bullpen between now and the next time the team requires a fifth starter, which is April 30th. Another possibility, though less likely from the sound of it, would be to not skip the turn when it could come up next. The third option would be to send Burgos back to Nashville where he’d make his next start and perhaps call up a relief pitcher for the next 10 days.

Roenicke said that they talk about it on Sunday to “see where we are and what we want to do.” Roenicke admitted that the chance exists to not keep Burgos up for the next week and a half.

But those are decisions for the management to make. For the players, a crisp victory in under three hours sends everybody home happy.

Well, maybe not the Cubs.

Brewers By the (Jersey) Numbers – #51 Michael Gonzalez

BBtJN LogoWelcome back to “Brewers By the (Jersey) Numbers”, my annual countdown to Opening Day by way of the numbers players are wearing during Spring Training.

Today we sit 51 days away from Miller Park coming to life for the regular season. Sure, there are a couple of Spring Training games against the Chicago White Sox the weekend prior, but April 1st is when the games start to matter.

Wearing 51 for the upcoming season will be a new addition to the ball club for 2013…

Michael Gonzalez.

Now a 10 year Major League veteran, Michael Vela Gonzalez was originally drafted all the back in 1997 by the Pittsburgh Pirates. A 30th round selection, Gonzalez made his big league debut in 2003. It didn’t go well.

Starting in 2004 though, Gonzalez put together a six-year run where he had an ERA over 2.70 just once, and he was under 1.60 twice. Gonzalez has 56 career Saves, including a career high 24 in 2006 for Pittsburgh.

Gonzalez spent four seasons in Pittsburgh and was then traded to Atlanta in January 2007. He would pitch as a Brave for parts of three seasons.

The reason for the “parts of” inclusion above is that after signing with the Braves, Gonzalez experienced some elbow soreness in Spring Training eventually leading to Tommy John surgery on Thursday, May 31, 2007.

That was the start of a bit of an injury bug for Gonzalez as he would only pitch in 29 games in 2010, though that also likely had a little something to do with his pitching in a career high 80 games in 2009.

After pitching in 2010 with the Baltimore Orioles, Gonzalez began 2011 there as well. He was traded mid-season to the Texas Rangers but made only seven appearances for them.

So that brings us, quickly and with a decided lack of detail, to the 2012 season.

Gonzalez signed a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals and contributed 35.2 innings toward 98 victories and a National League East Division crown, the first in Nationals history in Washington.

Though he was far better against left-handed hitting, Gonzalez saw an almost equal split of hitters. It speaks to how the Brewers should use him in 2013, but also how the Brewers might use him.

In my opinion, Gonzalez would be best served primarily facing and handling left-handed hitters in high-leverage situations. It won’t always be a LOOGy situation, but if it’s close and late against the Cincinnati Reds, for example, and Jay Bruce is coming up, I would hope that Ron Roenicke has called down to the bullpen so that Gonzalez can be ready to go.

I fully expect Roenicke to utilize Gonzalez in full innings too. That’s based on two things. First, the way he used Manny Parra in relief speaks to how he views left-handed relievers, but also that Roenicke has said that he doesn’t necessarily even need a lefty reliever. I’m hoping, though, that with two southpaws in the bullpen in 2013 he’ll be able to play match ups more than he has in the past and surprise all of us.

I made reference to the splits that Gonzalez has posted back in my article when the Brewers first signed him. If you want to see the specific numbers you can click right here. But suffice it to say that Gonzalez is very good when facing a hitter from the same side.

Gonzalez’ contract is just a one-year pact and breaks down financially thusly.

It’s worth $2.25 million guaranteed but has incentives built in should Gonzalez end up closing for the Brewers. He would earn an additional $50,000 for 25 games finished, $75,000 each for 30 and 35 games finished and $100,000 apiece for 40 and 50 games finished.

Gonzalez is being counted on to come through in important situations for the Brewers in 2013. Important situations where the men called upon to handle similar situation in 2012 failed too often. It’s why, assuming seven members, the Opening Day bullpen in 2013 will feature six new arms.

This is an effective veteran who is still very good at what he does and would be even better if he focused on lefties. That being said, we Brewers fans should be able to expect more of what the Nationals fans saw in 2012.

And if we get that, we along with the Brewers coaching staff will be able to breathe easier more often than any of us got to over the previous 162.

That sounds good to me.

Official Release: Brewers On Deck To Feature Over 50 Players, Coaches

Thirty-two current Milwaukee Brewers players from the 40-man roster plus a host of alumni, Minor League prospects, coaches, front office executives and broadcasters are scheduled to participate in Brewers On Deck, which is set to take place Sunday, January 27 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Delta Center.  The event is presented by Time Warner Cable.

Brewers On Deck is the annual Fan Fest that bridges the gap between winter and Spring Training.  Players, coaches and alumni scheduled to attend include the following (all subject to change):

Tickets for Brewers On Deck are currently on sale.  Advance tickets are $15 for adults and $9 for children ages 14 and under. Tickets may be purchased at the Miller Park ticket office, by calling the Brewers Ticket office at 414-902-4000, or online at Brewers.com/ondeck. On the day of the event, only cash will be accepted for purchases made at the door.  Tickets the day of the event are $20 for adults and $15 for children 14 and under.

Brewers On Deck will feature a number of activities for the entire family.  Autographs and photos from Brewers players and coaches, interactive games in the Kids Area, Q&A sessions and game shows with coaches, players and staff, vendor booths with baseball memorabilia, the Brewers Community Foundation Treasure Hunt and many other activities will all be a part of Brewers On Deck.

The same system for autographs will be used for Brewers On Deck that was used last year.  Recipients of any “PREMIER” autographs (players to be announced at a later date) will be chosen through a random selection process. Numbered coupons to be entered into the random selection process will be available the day of the event only and will be distributed beginning at 8 a.m. at the Delta Center. Coupon distribution will be available up to an hour before each designated autograph session. A schedule of players, their session times, and distribution info will be posted later this month.

Fans can receive one coupon per event admission ticket and can use that coupon to enter the random selection process for any one of the select Brewers players. There is no cost for coupons to enter the random selection process; however, those holding coupons that are chosen must pay $25 at the respective autograph stage to collect their player signature. There will be 250 winners for each of the PREMIER autograph sessions.

Players and staff not included in the PREMIER autograph list will not use the random selection process. Each of these players will sign 250 autographs at prices ranging from free to $10. The autograph opportunities are for signatures on photo cards provided by the team; the Brewers cannot guarantee that any player will sign other memorabilia.  For additional information regarding the lottery process, visit Brewers.com/ondeck.

This column will first be publicized automatically via my 30,000th tweet on Twitter. Even though I had begun compiling this information a couple of weeks ago, I was going to wait until closer to the regular season to post these numbers. This was in an effort to not waste time or column space on players who ended up not being with the Brewers come the start of Spring Training.

But with the aforementioned milestone tweet bearing down on me, I felt it appropriate to make this post coincide.

I will keep this space updated* throughout the season with current 2013 totals as the players listed work toward the attainable milestones. Should a player achieve a milestone, I will list it and the date it was achieved and (if appropriate) list the next milestone on the statistical path which the player could achieve.

So bookmark this one folks and refer back to it as often as necessary throughout 2013. This information will appear on the individuals’ “Brewers By the Jersey Numbers” previews as well.

Ryan Braun

Perennial all-star Ryan Braun achieved his first two milestones of the season on Friday, April 19th against the Chicago Cubs. He collected the 2000th base of his career on a first inning home run. The three RBI from that homer also moved him into a sixth-place tie on the all-time list with former Brewer Prince Fielder.

So far this season, Rickie Weeks has surpassed Greg Vaughn for 12th place in total bases in Brewers history. Next up on the list is Gorman Thomas.

Weeks has also tied Ben Oglivie for 6th place on the all-time franchise list for Walks with 432.

Weeks collected the 1500th total base in his MLB career with a double on Friday, April 19th against the Cubs at Miller Park.

John Axford

John Axford’s first three strikeouts in 2013 pushed him ahead of Pete Vukovich on the all-time list in Brewers history. Axford has since broken a three-way tie in 36th place with Bob Wickman and Shaun Marcum. In 35th place is Bill Parsons with 280 K.

Axford’s eight games played in 2013 have now moved him all the way up to 18th on the all-time Brewers list of games played. This year he has broken his tie with Ray King (206), and surpassed both Chris Bosio (212) and Teddy Higuera (213).

Marco Estrada

In his first start of the season, Estrada struck out eight hitters. Those sent him flying past Mike Fetters and then Chuck Crim into a tie at 41st on the Brewers’ all-time list with Lary Sorensen. With his next 13 strikeouts over two starts, Estrada overtook Ben McDonald (256) and sits one shy of Pete Vukovich in 39th place.

Estrada’s four strikeouts on April 19th against the Cubs moved him ahead of Vukovich in 39th place, and past the tied Shaun Marcum and Bob Wickman, into sole possession of 37th place on the all-time list.

Estrada picked up his 10th career Win on Monday, April 8th against the Chicago Cubs.
